z The modern-day Olympics were first held in 1896 as the Games of the Olympiad. The first city to host this international tournament was Athens, a unanimous choice and an ode to the Olympic Games of ancient Greece. The first games, regarded as a massive success, set off a tradition that has been revered by sportspeople and sports enthusiasts worldwide. The games have seen several changes over the years. Changes in the kind of sports, increase in the number of sports, redefining of rules and formats have only made this tournament more inclusive and accessible. While the first-ever Olympics extended into the Summer Olympics format, we also have been introduced to three new formats of this multi-sport event: the Winter Olympics, the Summer Paralympics, and the Winter Paralympics.
