Venue Spotlight: The Barns at Wolf Trap - Concerts in November
Situated in what used to be two 18th-century barns, The Barns at Wolf Trap is one of the most happening live music venues in the DC area. With its intimate setting and an enviable event lineup all year round, it offers an excellent spot for music lovers wishing to experience some good music away from the hubbub. October to May is when a majority of the events happening at The Barns are scheduled, and we’ve come up with a list of some performances to check out this November.
Stephen Kellogg: American singer and songwriter Stephen Kellogg has made a name for himself with his brand of effusive music with cleverly woven humorous elements. The West Chester, PA native started his career in 2003 with the band he created - Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. The band performed consistently until going on a hiatus in 2012. Kellogg has since charted a solo career. In 2016, he dropped the compilation album South, West, North, East to positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. He has released several singles and an album since, including “Stephen Kellogg - Jam in the Van (Live Session),” “Love Me As I Am,” “I’ve Had Enough” and “Keep It Up, Kid,” and Objects in the Mirror. Only a few Stephen Kellogg tickets for his concert on November 4 remain, so grab them while you can.
Rudresh Mahanthappa and Hero Trio: Italian-born, Indian-origin saxophone player Mahanthappa immediately immersed himself in New York’s jazz music scene after moving there in 1997. Despite booking a steady stream of side gigs, his true passion lay in creating original music and he released the album Architextures in 1998 in collaboration with American pianist Vijay Iyer. Mahanthappa’s music has been greatly influenced by Carnatic music greats such as Kadri Gopalnath. Mahanthappa is also part of the Hero Trio, which also comprises François Moutin (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums). The trio’s most recent outing - the EP Animal Crossing - includes covers of jazz greats. Catch Mahanthappa and Hero Trio live on November 17 for what promises to be an exciting evening of music.
Eileen Ivers: With multiple awards and trophies in her kitty, American fiddler Eileen Ivers has helped change the face of traditional Irish music and bring it to the international stage. Through her extensive work in the 1980s and ‘90s - collaborative and solo - she has continually pushed the boundaries of folk music while deepening her knowledge of it at the same time. She is known for albums like Wild Blue (1996) and Crossing the Bridge (1999), as well as her work in Riverdance in 1995 and the soundtrack of the film Gangs of New York. Her most popular tracks include “Titanic Suite (Instrumental),” “Epilogue - The Deep and Timeless Sea (Voice)” and “Nearer My God to Thee (Instrumental).” She will take the stage at The Barns for two shows on November 27.
